1. Why we learn Tamil?
Two languages are better than one. It is important to keep your first language.
Learning Tamil will give your child the confidence to join in more actively in the classroom because your child will understand or will be able to guess words much faster.
Your child will begin to cultivate an interest about their heritage.
Your child will have a better understanding of people from other countries and cultures.
Your child will have a better idea of how language works and develop his or her literacy skills.
Your child may be keen to learn a third language later on.
You will notice an improvement in your child's performance in mainstream school and personal development.
A second language will provide wider career choices in business, diplomacy, education, journalism, commerce or tourism.
A good plan is for one parent to speak and read with the child in English, and the other parent to speak and read in Tamil, so your child converses in both languages at home. Your child can only speak Tamil with the support from you and your family.
2. Encouraging your child to learn Tamil
Spend at least an hour helping your child with his or her Tamil homework. You will find some interactive activities on our website if you need ideas.
After Tamil class, review the lesson with your child and communicate any feedback to our committee members.
Try to converse with your child in Tamil at home. Ask Tamil speaking friends or relatives to speak to your child in Tamil. Ask your child to interact with Tamil school teachers and students in Tamil.
Tell your child stories about our Tamil culture. Your child will begin to show an interest in the heritage. Translate some of the English text or stories into Tamil and vice versa as a fun exercise at home.
Ensure your child attends Tamil school regularly to qualify for awards.
3. Informing the school
It is the responsibility of the parent to advise the school if any detail concerning their child changes.
This includes change of address, medical information, leaving school early, absence, or when your child is being picked up by persons other than yourself.
Please inform the school by phone, email, SMS or written note.
4. Be a Volunteer
ETSC appreciates the assistance of our parent volunteers at our school and events. Parents have assisted the school by organising activities, supervising students and assisting teachers.
If you have a skill and wish to share it with us, please drop by. If you’re not sure how to help, drop by anyway. There’s always something to learn or do over coffee.
